KUALA LUMPUR: Yayasan Al-Bukhary yesterday donated RM3.5 million to Gaza war victims, the largest contribution in Malaysia so far.
A cheque for the amount, presented by the foundation’s deputy chairman Tan Sri Ismail Yusof, was made out to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Kuala Lumpur Foundation to Criminalise War.

Yayasan Al-Bukhary is a charity foundation which aims to help the development and improvement of Islam in the country.

Tabung Haji, the nation’s Haj co-operative, also made a donation of RM100,000 to Dr Mahathir’s foundation yesterday.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Abi Musa Asa’ari Mohamed Nor, presented a cheque for the sum to Dr Mahathir.
Speaking after receiving the donations, Dr Mahathir pledged that his foundation would maximise every sen and ringgit towards relief work in Gaza.

After thanking the contributors, the former prime minister repeated his condemnation of Israel’s act of war, saying the Israelis were “worse than animals”.

“They don’t deserve to be called humans. Humans don’t resolve conflicts by going on a senseless killing spree,” he said.

Referring to Israel’s stand that they were invading Gaza in retaliation for Hamas’ rocket attacks, Dr Mahathir said Hamas had every right to fire at Israel because Palestine was their land.

On Parliament’s special session on Monday to debate the Gaza war, Dr Mahathir hoped the House would send a resolution to the United Nations for the convening of a war crimes tribunal against Israel.
